Womens Work in the Emirates Traditional Society: Extended Societal Perception for Labor Force Definition

Auther : Mohammed I. Mansour

This paper asserts that the definition of ``labor force, which is prevalent in the economic literature, is inappropriate for evaluating womens work because it does not consider domestic housework and related activities as part of the labor force. About 140 women were interviewed and their experiences regarding the work they contributed in traditional society were recorded.Analysis of time budgets was used to collect and measure the flow of womens labor input into domestic housework and related activities. It was concluded that evidence is irrefutable that this work is important and must be included in any definition of labor force.

Key words: Women, Labor Market, Time Budgeting, Labor Concept, Womens Labor-Force Participation, Emirates Traditional Society, Subsistence Economy.
