The Sources of Vocational Stress among Teachers in Kuwait and it’s Relation to Psychosomatic Disorders

Auther : Owaid Al-Mashaan

The present study aimed at assessing the relationship between the sources of vocational stress and psychosomatic disorders in light of gender, nationality, and academic specialization in intermediate school teachers. The sample of 746 teachers consisted of 377 males and 369 females, 363 Kuwaitis and 383 non-Kuwaitis, and 489 teachers of literary subjects and 257 teachers of scientific subjects. The three scales employed were a scale for vocational stress, a scale for role ambiguity and conflict, and a scale for assessing psychosomatic disorders. Results revealed significant differences between males and females, and between literary subject teachers and scientific subject teachers on all three scales. Female teachers, as well as Kuwaiti teachers, scored significantly higher for vocational stress and psychosomatic disorders. While there were no significant differences between literary and scientific subject teachers on the above three scales, scientific subject teachers scored higher on vocational burdens, while literary subject teachers scored higher on role ambiguity and conflict. Results also indicated a significant and positive correlation between vocational stress and psychosomatic disorders.

Keywords: vocational stress, teachers, psychosomatic disorders.
