The Arab Commercial Trainning Diplomacy between Reality and Ambition, Case Study: Institute of Diplomatic studies

Auther : Hamad Al-Salamah

Trade diplomacy is becoming a subject of increasing importance. It has become a major focus of study in the Diplomatic institutes and colleges of International Relations in developed countries. This development has come to pass as a result of commercial and trade competition. Subsequently, embassies and trade commissions have increasingly played a positive role in furthering each country’s particular economic goals. As a result embassies have had to retrain staff and attachإs to meet the continually changing requirements. The study has therefore placed greater emphasis on the commercial savvy of the diplomat. It evaluates the point of view of higher-level diplomats in developed countries; then it goes on to discuss the narrowing of focus in diplomatic training, particularly in the area of trade, in a number of diplomatic and academic institutes, such as the American Foreign Service Institute and Oxford Programme for Foreign Service. The objective of this study is to analyze current Arab training in commercial diplomacy, first in general, then in Saudi Arabia in particular. My methodology is to examine the contents of the programs of the individual institutes. The aim is to find shortcomings in present programs and to suggest possible solutions in evaluations of future curricula. The conclusion of the study has been that shortcomings do in fact exist and need to be addressed.

Key words: Trade, diplomatic job, commercial diplomatic training: The American foreign service institute and the Oxford program for foreign services, current Arab training in commercial diplomacy: Egypt, Sudan, Jordan, and Oman, Saudi Arabia Institue of Diplomtic studies, suggested programs for trade Diplomat: Training.
