What’s New in Political Development? A critical View

Auther : Hoda Mitkis

The study deals with recent evolutions in the field of political development. It is mostly concerned to follow, as well as to define, the structural transformations in third world countries. To achieve this goal the research tries to verify the beginnings of this science in the Western world during the mid-fifties. It is noteworthy that the early literature in political development aimed at maintaining stability and continuity in the Third World countries by imposing the modernisation model. The study also emphasizes the need to develop new approaches in the field of political development to cope with recent events on the international scene, especially with the emergence of new concerns, such as {Civil Society} versus {State} and {Pluralism} as major components in the political process. The main research concern is to try to answer several questions related to the goals of recent interests in political development, and this is through a process of conceptualisation clarifying the theoretical and ideological divergences in this matter as well as the Arab contributions in this field. As a conclusion, the study reveals the tremendous impact of the recent interests in political development on the theoretical field in which the concept of the ``Developmental State’’ has become one of the most important variables. Recent literature tends to minimize the previous importance of having two different developmental policies, trying to abolish any divergences in this field. That is why the study of the democratization process (its mechanisms and strategies) occupies an eminent place in the recent political development literature. The interdisciplinary approach has become one of the most important characteristics of the recent evolution in political development as well as the need for Instauring a certain balance between the state and the market within the context of international economy.

Key words: Development, Development State, Democratization, Civil Society, State of the art, Approach.
