Development of African-Kuwaiti Relations

Auther : Abdulla Al-Anzi / Murdi Al-Khaldi

African-Kuwaiti relations began after Kuwait’s independence in 1961 and were based on cultural, geographic and historic factors. Kuwait attempted to prove its political entity and achieve international recognition (1961-1967), following the Iraqi threats against its independence. This attempt was limited to African-Kuwaiti intra-recognition and bilateral official visits. The period of 1967-1976 witnessed a complete change as Kuwait devoted foreign policy support as well as financial resources to the liberation and independence of African countries, tangibly and morally condemning colonialism. Real construction and development of these relations took place during the period of 1973-1990. Such a change involved reactions within political, economic and cultural aspects, based on strong grounds of intra-recognition and equality of interest. The attitudes of African countries were honorable on diplomatic and military levels as they condemned the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait and asked for withdrawal. Their attitudes were expressed through the African Unity Organization, Islamic World Organization, Security Council and the United Council.

Keywords: Kuwait, Africa, Kuwaiti - African relations, Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, attitudes of African countries toward the Iraqi invasion.
