Privatizatoin and its Impacts on the National Workforce of Kuwait

Auther : Awadh Al-Enezi

This study investigates the relationship between privatization and the employment of the Kuwaiti workforce, exploring possible means to contain the expected influences of this process. The study indicates that privatization is only one element of economic reform, or capitalist restructuring, programs which both the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund have called for since the late 1970s, and which developing countries are advised to adopt in their attempt to adjust distortions in their economies caused by the overwhelming government intervention.

Privatization is not only confined to the transfer of the ownership of enterprises management from public to private sector, but it refers to a comprehensive attitude to implement market laws and mechanisms. Privatization, however, is expected to affect the empoloyment of the national workforce. These effects wil vary according to the time horizon and the labor market status. This study, however, explores these effects, and outlines possible avenues to contain their negative implications.

Keywords: Privatization, Economic reform, Capitalist restructuring.
