psychosocial problems: An Islamic perspective

Auther : Ibrahim A. Ragab

The purpose of this study is to partially apply a formal methodology for the Islamization of knowledge to the study of a specific social science subject area. It begins with a definition of the Islamization of Knowledge according to current usage, and explicates the major elements of a systematic methodology for the Islamization of the social sciences in some detail. It then attempts to apply that methodology to the study of one social area (psychosocial problems). The stage is set with a brief account of the Islamic perspective on human nature, which is clearly shown to contrast distinctly with the corresponding view which emanates from the prevailing positivist/ empiricist paradigm. On the basis of that discussion of human nature, an attempt is made to describe the nature of personal, ``psychosocial’’ problems and their etiology from an Islamic perspective. It is shown that there can be no real explanation of these problems that ignores the spiritual factors, i.e. relationship between man and God. An attempt is then made to describe appropriate intervention strategies designed to help alleviate such problems within the Islamic perspective.
