The Moroccan Islamic movement and 1997 legislative elections.

Auther : Hasan Oranfal

This paper explains the underlying factors behind the participation of the Islamic Movement in the 1997 Moroccan legislative elections. Considering that the Islamists were not allowed to participate in previous elections, the study seeks to determine whether it represents a political effort to integrate the Islamic movement. To do so, the author has attempted to analyze the discourse of the Islamists during the election campaign. He has focused on the characteristics of Islamist candidates, as well as on the factors that contributed to the success of some of them. Ultimately, the paper seeks to explain the Islamists’ success by reference to certain contemporary political theories which maintain that voters no longer give their preference to specific parties in elections, but that the personality factor plays a greater role in the choice of representatives.
