Problems of Academicians: An Empirical Study from Jordan

Auther : Ghazi H. Sawa / Yahya A. Ali

This study attempts to determine the relationship between certain sociodemographic and academic variables and problems encountered by Jordanian academicians with doctoral degrees from non-Arab universities. Data were collected through a questionnaire distributed to a representative sample of 448 academicians working at public and private institutions of higher education and scientific research in Jordan. Descriptive statistical procedures, t-test, and one-way analysis of variance were used to analyze the data. The results revealed statistically significant differences between the respondents’ mean scores on all of the problems (i. e. research, financial, administrative, academic, social, political, linguistic) encountered by academicians attributed to each of the following variables: age, marital status, year of return after obtaining doctorate, place of work, academic rank, and duration of academic service. Contrary to expectations, no significant differences were found among the respondents’ mean scores on the abovementioned problems relevant to sex, specialty, social environment, and host country. More specific variations were found among respondents’ scores on individual problems due to each of the independent variables under investigation.
