Wasteful Consumption in Affluent Societies: A Diffrent Perspective

Auther : Eqbal al-Rahmani

Human behavior with regard to personal consumption reflects a complex relationship between people, goods, society, and the natural environment. Hence, any attempt to understand this relationship Within one theoretical field of thought is bound to be limited. This paper points to some of the limitations of Neoclassical econimic analysis of the determinants and consequences of personal consumption. In addition, the paper reviews two other theoretical contributions, the institutionalist and environmentalitst approaches. These two approaches offer different explanations and evaluations of consumption behavior, especially of wasteful consumption in affluent societies. The paper ends with some reflections on the experience of the Arabian Gulf States.
