The Development of an Arabic Version of the Life Orientation Test as a Measure of Optimism

Auther : Bader M. Alansari

The Life Orientation Test (Lot) (Scheier & Carver, 1985) has repeatedly been reported to be a better predictor of optimism. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to develop an Arabic version of the LOT, to test its psychometric properties and to assess optimism rates among Kuwait University students. The scale consisted of (8) items (true/false). Ten studies were carried out in order to achieve the study objectives. The Samples Consisted of (250), (195), (211), (165), (162), (340), (85) and (111) undergraduate students from both sexes administered the Lot in order to assess reliability, validity, gender differences, and the correlation between optimism with some personality variables. It was found that: (1) The LOT has good internal consistency ranged from. 0.70 - 0.87 across four different samples, (2) The stability Coefficients of the LOT raged from 0.92 - 0.96 across two different samples, (3) Two factors have been extracted (optimism and Pessimism), (4) Optimism correlated significantly positively with: unrealistic optimism, depression, obsession, anxiety, guilt, shame, and pessimism, and negatively correlated with optimism, and (5) Significant gender difference was reported in which females scored higher than males in two studies.

Key words: LOT, Psychometric Properties, Personality correlates, Optimism; BDI; Guilt; Depression, Shame, Pessimism, Unrealistic optimism, Anxiety, Obsession, Hopelessness.
