Crime Theatre: A Geographical Perspective for Supporting Police Role in Preventing Crime

Auther : Mohamed Medhat Gaber

The paper aims to show that crime should be studied within an interdisciplinary approach. Crime theatre is ignored in most crime studies. The paper discusses the development of crime theatre and its spatial components, e.g., crime theatre characteristics, spatial variations in crime ratios, the role of urban morphology, and urban land uses in crime occurrence. Special attention is devoted to the stages of spatial perception of individuals in crime theatre and the concept of mental maps. The movement of criminals in the crime theatre represents the core of crime theatre analysis, and is deeply interpreted through the role of both geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) in supporting police efforts in crime prevention. Ten recommendations are presented to enhace more investigations related to crime theatre. The study calls for integrating both spatial and behavioral dimensions to understand the relation between crime theatre and crime prevention.

Key words: Crime theatre, Spatial dimensions, The journey to crime, Geography of crime, Crime prevention, GIS,RS.
