Realism vs. Globalism and International Issues: An Emprical Analysis, 1990-1997

Auther : Adnan M. Hayajnehگ

The paper investigated the validity of the two main approaches in the study of international relations namely realism and globalism. The paper tested two hypotheses regarding the issues of each school during the time period from 1990 to 1997. The first hypothesis argued that realism will lead to more concentration on military and security issues in international affairs, while the globalist hypothesis, argued that globalism will lead to more concentration on soft security issues.

Content analysis was used to test the two hypotheses, using the first page of a leading newspaper, Ad-Dustour, to uncover the issues of each school. The study found that (519) cases match the definition of the study regarding the issues of the two schools.

It was found that military and armament issues are still the main important issues in international politics. More importantly, the paper concludes that globalism is a new version of realism since it is the yardstick and the explaining theory of the hegemonic behavior during the time period of investigation. Poverty, pollution, population and many other important issues do not receive the same attention by international actors in the new ``American International System’’.

Keywords: Realism, Globalism, International issues, Empirical analysis, Realism vs. Globalism debate, Content analysis.
