The Role of Facebook in the Outbreak of the Egyptian Revolution. A Sociological Study of "We Are All Khaled Said" Website

Auther : Saleh S. Abdelazim

The main aim of the current study is to identify the role of Facebook in the January 25th revolution through a focus on ``We are all Khaled Said'' Page, which was established on the 10th of June, 2010. The Study also seeks to identify the mechanisms which have been used by the page in the period before the revolution to highlight the aggression of the Egyptian government against their citizens.
Methodologically, this study depends on content analysis, where it focuses on all the pages posts since its establishment till the outbreak of the revolution. By using this method, the study analyzes the pages, pictures, songs, clips, and readers comments which led to portray the main characteristics of the whole discourse of the site.
In the light of this analysis it cannot be said that Facebook and other social networking sites are the cause of the outbreak of Arab Spring revolutions, including the Egyptian Revolution, as it could be argued that the use of these social networks has helped in stimulating and accelerating the outbreak of these revolutions, providing them with new and unprecedented power in the history of human revolutions.
Keywords:  Social networking, Facebook, January 25th revolution, ``We are all Khaled Said'' Site, Content analysis, New social movement.
