Subjective Well - Being and its Relation to Religiosity among a Sample of Elderly Kuwaitis

Auther : Ahmd Abdel-Khalek Amthal Alhuwailah

The aim of this study is to investigate the relation between subjective well-being (SWB) and religiosity. The samples examined consisted of 380 elderly Kuwaitis comprising 194 men and 186 women with an age mean of 63.92 yrs (SD=6.15) and 62.97 yrs (SD=5.87) respectively. The participants responded to six self-rating scales in order to assess their mental health, physical health, satisfaction with life, happiness, religiosity, and strength of religious belief. They also responded to three extra questionnaires meant to assess their love of life, positive and negative affect, and religious attitudes. No significant gender-related differences were found in all the variables. Results revealed statically-significant and positive correlations between SWB and religiosity. A principal components analysis was computed and two factors were deduced: SWB and the comfort of religiosity. The study concluded that certain religious aspects can be used for psychotherapeutic treatment or counseling of elderly Kuwaitis.
