Towards a Methodological Definition of Islamic Political Thought

Auther : Mohammad Al-Sayed Selim

Despite the rise of the studies of Islamic political thought since the beginning of the 1970s of the 20th century, these studies have focused mainly on the content of that thought with little attention to its definition, or with delineating its boundaries. This led to an overlap between studies of Islamic political thought, studies of the Islamic political system, and studies of Arab political thought, which resulted in the production of studies which claim to deal with the former, while in fact addressing the latter. To overcome such overlap, a more specified definition of methodology, which determines the boundaries of the field of Islamic political thought, is required. This is in brief, the main focus of this paper.
The paper contributes to the fulfillment of the task of determining the beginning and the end of the concept of Islamic political thought through defining its main elements with a view of introducing a methodologically-based definition of that thought, which comprise a conceptual and an operational definition. The paper begins with acritical literature review on the definition of Islamic political thought. It then introduces the conceptual and operational definitions and demonstrates their relevance to defining Islamic political thought. It then presents a conceptual definition of that thought and derives from it, an operational definition. The presented operational definition contains seven indicators of Islamic political thought which ought to be present in order to label the issue as one falling under Islamic political thought rubric. To validate the operational definition, a test of validity and reliability was conducted using a sample of students majoring in the study of Islamic political thought who were trained to apply both definitions. The test results concluded that most members of the sample were able to identify issues related to Islamic political thought using the operational definition presented in this paper.
