Auther : Majed M. Al-Ali

The study explores the relationship between emotional intelligence and some psychological variables namely: social skills, social anxiety and loneliness. It also seeks to identify differences between males' and females' scores across the variables under study. Moreover it studies the best predictors of emotional intelligence, and finally explores the effect of academic specialization and gender on emotional intelligence. The samples comprised students (N= 206, 101 males, 106 females), M= 15.4 yrs, SD=1.6 from secondary school of tenth and twelve grades. Four tools were used: Emotional Intelligence by Alrabi'a (2006), Social Skills by Albert (2005), Social Anxiety by Liebowitz (2004) and loneliness by Al-Behery (1985). Findings indicate a significant positive correlation between emotional intelligence and social skills among the total samples; it identified a significant negative correlation between emotional intelligence and social anxiety and loneliness; there were differences between gender across the variables of emotional intelligence and social anxiety. The best predictors of the emotional intelligence in the total samples were social skills and social anxiety. Finally, the significant effect of gender on emotional intelligence has been clearly noticed.
