Social and Economic Motives for Murder in the Family: Content Analysis of Al-Masry Al-Youm Newspaper in the Period of 2009-2011

Family murders have increased in recent years all over the world with the Egyptian society as no exception. There is no doubt that the Egyptian family was subjected to a series of factors which have had a negative impact on its construction. These factors contributed to the increase in crimes of violence, murder and revenge within the family. Murders were committed interchangeably byhusbands of their wives, parents of their offspring, brothers against sisters,the young against the old and among relatives. This study aims to: Identify the social and economic motives behind killings within the family. For this purpose, the researcher relied on content analysis of Al-Masry Al-Youm newspaper in the period from the beginning of 2009 and until the end of 2011.
The study yielded several results: The most common patterns of homicides were murders of parents of their children ; motives behind committing a crime varied depending on the nature and method of the crime; the weapon most commonly used was cold steel particularly in cases of husbands killing their wives or of wives their husbands.
