Academic Librarians' Perspectives on Learning Commons and Libraries of the Future: The Kuwaiti Case

Auther : Taghreed Alqudsi-Ghabra Samir N. Hamade Auon M. Hussain

Making libraries comfortable and attractive places for reading and searching for information has been a matter of considerable concern for librarians worldwide. With the widespread of the Internet and electronic information resources that are accessible from home at practically no or low cost, some librarians are becoming increasingly skeptical about the future of libraries. The crux of the matteris how to convince users to return to the library, and how the library can evolve while still preserving its original functions. The current study aims to understand Kuwaiti academic librarians' pursuit for creating learning commons and explore their attitudes towards changing physical landscapes in academic libraries and its future direction. A questionnaire was designed and sent to 36 academic librarians in Kuwait, 32 responded and participated in the study with a response rate of 89%. The questionnaire was divided into six sections aiming to provide answers and meet the objectives of the study.
Results show that academiclibrarians gave great importance to research and its related activities in the libraryand learning commons. They also gave moderate importance to the facilities and comfort of the users. On the other hand, they gave little importance to users' entertainment(cafإs, TV rooms, cinemas, and theatres). These results indicate that academic librarians in Kuwait still see the library as a serious place to study and conduct research, and they see entertainment facilities as distractions from the main objectives of learning and the academic library.
Key words: Library Buildings, Library Facilities, Library Users, Library Design, Library Commons, Library Functionality.
