Developing Media Education Skills through Social Media Based on the Teaching Experience of Media Faculty in Saudi Universities -A Field Study

Auther : Hasan Mohammed Mansoor

This study aims to identify the methods of developing media literacy skills through social media based on the teaching experience of media faculty in the Saudi universities. More specifically, it aims at developing the methods of students' skills of criticism and media production, in addition to identifying the extent of applicability of these methods by faculty members, the difficulties they face, and the effect of the variables of (sex/academic experience/specialization) on the professors' adoption of those methods. In its theoretical framework, this study is based on ``Social Media Literacy'', which does not involve teaching how to use networks (such as Twitter and Facebook), but rather aims to achieve a high level of efficiency in using social media networking, and critical evaluation of all forms of communication that take place through them. The researcher used a questionnaire that consisted of a number of open-ended questions. It was distributed during April / May 2016 on a sample of 140 media professors in seven Saudi universities, of whom 35 professors and lecturers answered the questionnaire items. The results indicated that 60.6% believed that social media is very important to develop media literacy skills. The study reviewed the methods that could be used to improve the students' specific skills through using social media, such as shortening skills, identifying the sources and purposes of the media material, logical comparisons, deconstruction of the media message, providing critical views for media production, providing knowledge about a particular topic in print, visual, audible, or multimedia form, and implementation of media campaigns.
