Trends of Jordanian Society Members on the Issue of Sexual Harassment of Children: a Social Study of Causes and Solutions

Auther : Enas Oliemat

This study aimed at identifying the attitudes of teachers and parents towards sexual harassments of children in Jordan. The study sample consisted of (250) participants, of whom 150 were male and 100 were females, and their age group ranged between 25 and 45 years. To achieve the study objectives, a scale of attitudes towards sexual harassment of children was administered on the study sample. The study results showed that the main causes underlying the children's sexual harassment were manifested by the following: the absence of family control associated with intimidation and battery; the lack of dialogue and discussion with children as well as the lack of parental guidance and enlightenment about cases of sexual harassment; families' fear of scandal or of reporting such forms of abuse; absence of religious or ethical conscience; children's exposure to pornographic films in the media; and finally granting servants and relatives excessive trust and not monitoring their behavior with children. With regard to the role of the school environment, the results revealed the absence of the school's role in educating and raising awareness about sexual harassment among students, and the lack of monitoring the students within the school facilities. The study concluded with a number of suggestions to eliminate the vulnerability of children to sexual harassment, such as strengthening the religious and ethical conscience, building a good healthy relation between parents and their children based on openness, training the children on the skills of self-defense, not leaving them alone with strangers, and monitoring their behavior and the programs they watch in the media.
