The Arab Spring and Regional and International Perspectives toward the Arab Gulf Region

Auther : Adnan Hayajneh

The paper discussed the role of the Arab Spring as one of the major transformations that had played an important role in the strategic rethinking of many issues in the Arab world. The Arab Spring has witnessed many internal, regional and international changes within the Arab world. Those changes influenced the strategic perceptive of the GCC states regarding many internal, regional and international issues.
The changes that have emerged from the Arab Spring have played an important role in changing the strategic map of the Gulf region through changing the balance of power and the regional system as well as the perception of the leading states within the region. The study showed that Saudi Arabia had emerged as a leading influential player of the GCC to protect their interests followed by countries of what is called the axis of moderation and that is due to the exit of Egypt and Iraq from the regional game. The new Arab changes obliged Saudi Arabia to play a more public role than before and this was represented by the military operation ``Decisive Storm'' with all its concomitant challenges and issues.
The transformations of the Arab Spring played an important role in the way that the superpowers, especially the USA and Russia, had dealt with the Syrian issue which was not compatible with the aspirations of some influential GCC states such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar. The emergence of this divergence, coupled with the Iranian deal, was perceived as a negative role by the US. The paper argued that the GCC under the Saudi leadership has to stand for their own to protect their own interests.
Keywords: Arab Spring, Internal challenges, GCC States, Regional System, Saudi Arabia Role, Iranian Nuclear deal.
