Internet Addiction and its Relationship to Personality among a Sample of University Students in Lebanon

Auther : Ahmed M. Abdel-khalek Mayssah A. EL-Neyal Gamal E. Megahed

This study aimed at exploring the relationship between Internet Addiction (IA), and same personality variables, such as self-esteem, mental disorders (obsession - compulsion "OC"; insomnia), religiosity, and well-being, in a sample of students at Beirut Arab University (N=229). The findings showed that gender differences were not statistically significant in all variables. IA correlated significantly with insomnia and OC in both sexes. In the female sample, IA correlated negatively with the following variables: self-esteem, self-reported physical and mental health, and satisfaction with life. Correlation coefficients were analyzed by principal components method. Three factors were extracted in the male sample, and were lablled: Self-esteem and well-being, IA and mental disorder, Internet usage duration and religiosity. On the other hand, three factors were extracted from the female sample, and were labelled: Well-being vs. insomnia, IA and mental disorders, Religiosity and self-esteem vs. Internet usage duration. The study concluded that IA was related to mental disorder indicators and may harm well-being. Thus, it was recommended that it is necessary to provide preventive programs to reduce the amount of internet usage.
