The Relationship between Low Skin Conductance Orienting Response and Both Anxiety and Depression among a Sample of Female College Students

Auther : Mai Edris

The objective of the study was to examine the relationship between weak skin conductance orienting response and both anxiety and depression among a sample of female college students at the Faculty of arts, Cairo university. Two indicators were used to determine weak skin conductance orienting response: absence of response and fast habituation rates. Based on these indicators the low responders group was made of 16 female students, 9 of them were completely non responders and the rest were fast habituators. Sixteen female students with normal habituation response constituted the control group.  The two groups were compared on Spilberger's trait and state anxiety Inventory (STAI-Y), Guilford scale of depression (D) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-IA). The results demonstrated significant differences between the two groups on the depression scales, with the low responders scoring significantly higher than the normal group. There were no differences between the two groups on anxiety questionnaires.
