Religiosity and its Relation to Anxiety among a Sample of Kuwait University Students

Auther : Ahmed M. Abdel-khalek Soud Alghanem

This study aimed at highlighting the relationship that holds between religiosity and anxiety. To achieve this aim, a sample of 422 Kuwait university undergraduates were recruited (215 men; 207 women). Their ages ranged between 17 and 32 (M= 20.2, SD= 2.9 for men; M= 19.4, SD= 2.1 for women). They responded, in a medium size group sessions, to four scales: the Attitude towards the Islamic Religion Scale, Intrinsic Religious Motivation Scale, Trait Anxiety Scale of Spielberger et. al, and Anxiety subscale from the General Health Questionnaire. Results revealed non-significant differences between men and women on the mean scale scores. However, three out of the four correlations were statistically significant and negative in men, and in all cases among women. A principal component analysis of the correlation matrices for the two genders, followed by Varimax orthogonal rotation method, yielded two coefficients, namely 'religiosity' and 'anxiety'. It was concluded that there was a possibility to use some aspects of religiosity in the psychotherapeutic process of the anxiety disorder among Muslim peers similr to the study sample.
