Analysis of the Electoral Behavior, Content of Campaigns, and Strategies of the Candidates: Examination of the Three Parliamentary Elections of the Federal National Council in UAE

Auther : Abdulfattah Yaghi Hisham Lutfi

The legislative elections of the Federal National Council (FNC) in the United Arab Emirates represent a positive example within the Arabian Gulf region. This study examined the three parliamentary elections of 2006, 2011, and 2015 by focusing on the content of the campaigns, and the strategies adopted by the candidates to promote their election campaign agenda in addition to examining the voting behavior of the voters and their decisions to vote for a particular candidate. To this end, qualitative and quantitative methodologies were utilized. The study findings indicated that winning and losing candidates have relied on both traditional campaigning strategies, such as newspaper and billboard advertising, and modern strategies, such as Social Media, with the winners tending to focus more on the modern methods. Candidates campaigned over educational, social, and economic policy issues in addition to issues related to women, national identity, and patriotism. Lastly, the study emphasized that the appointment system of half of the FNC members by the gorvenment has benefited women's representation.
