Differences in Suggestibility between Normal, Anxiety patients, and Schizophrenics

Auther : Ahmed Mohammad Abdel-Khalek

The aim of the present study was to investigate the differences in suggestibility between normal, anxiety patients, and schizophrenics (N=120). The 40 participants in each group were matched, as a group, in gender, age, education, occupation, and socio-economic status. Each participant responded, individually, to the Length Estimation Test (LET). It includes five sticks increasing in length and 10 sticks with the same length as the fifth one. The participant was requested to estimate the length of each one by centimeters. In every presentation, the experimenter said, take care, it is taller than the previous one.  The Weight Estimation Test (WET) was similar to the LET and the estimations were in grams. It was found that 99.17% and 94.17% of all the participants responded to and were affected with the experimenters suggestions on the LET and WET, respectively. Non-parametric analyses including Wilcoxon, Kruskal- Wallis, Bonferroni inequality, and X…2‡ showed schizophrenics as significantly more suggestible than both normal and anxiety patients. It was concluded that the LET and WET could be used as aids to psychological differentiation between schizophrenics and the other groups.

Key words: Suggestibility, Normal, Anxiety disorder patients, Schizophrenics.
