The Mental Health of Aging in Algeria: An Investigative Study of Aging while Living in Centers for The Aging

The currnet study aims to assess psychilogical and physical status in centers for aging people, to identify the manigestations of mental health and personality traits, the types that distinguish them, and to identigy the correlation between the educational level. economic level, wideows, widowers, and mental health among the aging. finally, we try to understand the differences between both sexes with regard to their mental health. The importance of this study is to provide objective solutions in the form of preventive actions which will contribute to protecting the mental health of aging, and thereby reduce the spread of problems connected with aging as much as possible.

A descriptive approach is used in this study; for that purpose a sample of 150 aging men and women living in cneters for agina representing the central and west of the country were randomly selected. The researcher based his research on an evaluative list related to the physical and mental conditions od the aging, and on a personality traits test as research instruments. Statistical methods were used: percentages, correlation coefficients, and measurement of paired-samples T tests. After statistical analysis was carried out on the data, the following results were found:

- The problem of mental health outunmbered all the othert problems, and their mental health level was low.

- There is a positive relationship between the following variables of aging: their rconomic level, their family conditions, their personality types and their mental health.

- There are significant differences between men and women in mental health, for the benefit of men.
