Speech Phobia in Saudi University Students and its Relationship with some Personality Variables: A Predictive Comparative Study

Auther : Ibrahim E. Ibrahim - Mahdey A. Elqarney

The objective of this study is to find out relationships between speech phobia, on the one hand, and social anxiety, social phobia, neuroticism, and extraversion/introversion, on the other hand, in 600 male and female students of King Khalid University (KKU) Saudi Arabia. The students were subjected to tests concerning speech phobia, social anxiety, and social phobia, in addition to an Arabic version B of Eysencks List of Personality.

The outcomes of the study prove that there is a significant positive correlation between speech phobia, and social anxiety, social phobia, and neuroticism in male and female students. As well, there is a significant negative correlation between speech phobia and extraversion.

Although the differences between male and female students proved to be statistically significant in speech phobia and neuroticism, other variables i.e. social anxiety and extraversion do not have that significance. The study, then, proves that social anxiety, social phobia, neuroticism and extraversion can help predict speech phobia, but, it should be admitted, the outcomes of that prediction do not hold for both male and female students.

Key words: Speech Phobia, Social Anxiety, Social Phobia, Neuroticism, Extraversion, Saudi University Students, Gender
