Russia’s Return to the Middle East: Mr. Putin’s Presidency (2000-2008)

Auther : Mekhled O.Al Mobiden

This study aims at researching the objectives and reasons for a united Russia’s return to the Middle East during President Putin’s period (2000-2008), when Russia regained some strength and was in competition with the United States. By using descriptive and analytical methods, the study shows the following: First; there are many objectives and reasons (political, strategic, economic, and security goals) beyond Russia’s return to the Middle East, after Russia gained economic strength and America’s became weaker in the region. Second, there were many internal and external obstacles and problems which faced Russia’s expansion and return to the Middle East. Third, Mr. Putin’s foreign policy raised the level of confidence between Russia and the people of the Middle East, especially Arabs, which may facilitate Russian expansion in the future. Fourth; it is expected that Russia will continue its activities as one of the patron’s of the peace process in the Middle East for her national interests as it lies to the south of Russia. Also a united Russia is doing its best to weaken western interests in the area, especially American ones.

Key words: The Middle East, Russia, President putin, The West.
