The Effects of Studying Psychology in Changing Students Attitudes towards the Discipline of Psychology at King Saud University

Auther : Hanan H. Atallah

This study aims to investigate the effects of studying psychology in changing the attitudes of students at King Saud University towards the discipline of psychology. It identifies four attitude factors: attitudes toward the role of psychology in self understanding and improvement; attitudes toward the role of psychology in improving family life and social relationships; attitudes toward the role of psychology in society; and attitudes toward the curriculum and methods of teaching in the Department of Psychology. The study sample constituted 460 students (230 first level and 230 fourth level). A questionnaire consisting of 59 items was designed, and its reliability and validity were tested. The results of the study demonstrate that there is a significant difference between the first level and the fourth level in three attitudes, but there is no significant difference in factors concerning the role of psychology in society. However, the difference in means between the first and fourth levels in the four attitude factors is not significant. This indicates that studying psychology for four years did not change the students> attitudes towards the discipline. The study concludes that the Department of Psychology at King Saud University needs to reconsider the curriculum and methods of teaching in order to achieve more realistic results that would be conducive to a change in attitudes. This implies that there should be a move from theory to practice-based orientation. It is recommended that more research be conducted in the area of attitudes towards professions in psychology, using a bigger and more varied sample for the study.
