Effects of Participation in the Workforce on the Physical and Psychological Well-Being of Working Women: A Comparative Study on Working and Nonworking Women in Amman, Jordan

Auther : Wisam D. Breik / Fawz S. Daoud

The following paper represents the findings of a study undertaken in Amman, Jordan to determine the influence of women>s participation in the workforce, and on their psychological and physical well-being. The rationale behind this study was that women, because of their obligations to fulfill multiple roles in society, are at risk of experiencing conflict. The sample consisted of 1,000 subjects: 565 working women who have been employed for at least 3 years, and 435 non-working women. The women>s ages ranged between 20-60 years. Four different scales were used to collect information about the physical well-being of the participants. The findings indicate significant differences between working and non-working women in stomach pyrosis (a psychosomatic symptom), hypertension, diabetes and cholesterol (chronic illness). The percentage of non-working women who suffer from these diseases were significantly higher than their working women counterparts. No significant differences were detected between working women and non-working women on psychological symptoms and self-assessment of health conditions. The results of this study correspond to the finding of other studies held in other cultures.

Key words: Children, Chronic diseases, Psychological well-being, Psychosomatic disorders, Self-assessment, Workforce, Working women.
