Auther : Hmoud F. Al-Qashaan-Suaad Abdullah Al-Beshr

The aim of this study is to explore the comparison between infertile and fertile couples and depression levels among Kuwaiti families (n=344) containing 194 males and 150 females. The sample is divided into two groups: The first group consisted of outpatients attending an infertility clinic (n= 237), while the second group consisted of outpatients attending another medical clinic (n= 107). Questionnaires were distributed to measure sample depression levels based upon sample demographic characteristics (gender; marital duration; womens work status; and cause of infertility).

The Statistical Package of Social Science (SPSS) was used to answer the research questions:

1 - Are there any differences between infertile and fertile couples in depression levels?

A. Are there any differences between infertile and fertile husbands in depression levels?
B. Are there any differences between infertile and fertile wives in depression levels?

2 - Are there any differences between males and females in infertile families?

3 - What are the importance of demographic variables (gender; marital duration; womens work status; and cause of infertility) in predicting depression levels among infertile wives?

Results reported that there are significant statistical differences between infertile and fertile couples in depression on the side of infertile couples. Indeed, there are no significant statistical differences between infertile and fertile husbands in depression levels, but the results showed that there are significant statistical differences between infertile and fertile wives in depression levels on the side of infertile wives. On the other hand, there are significant statistical differences between infertile males and females, In addition, demographic variables such as women not working, causes of infertility, elderly age, and long treatment durations were found to have significant predictors on depression levels in Infertile wives.
