Ecotourism in the State of KuwaitImpact Analysis and Sustainable Strategy

Auther : Suad Hakem, Asma A. Abahussain, Anwar S. Abdo

Tourism is one of the largest rapidly growing industries in the world, a thing that has had significant impacts on the global, regional and national economies. In Kuwait too, tourism has witnessed a substantial revival especially that the states ecotourism could greatly benefit from its natural endowments: an advantageous geographical location, a diversity of natural land and marine resources, and potentials for varied types of tourism. All this combined, seemed to attract a great number of local as well as international tourists and guests, which, in turn, brought about a substantial increase in the contribution made by the tourism sector to Kuwaits national income. The flourishing of tourism equally yielded a considerable number of economic, social and educational benefits. The results of the present study indicate that the number of tourists visiting recreational resorts, museums and cultural sites increased in the wake of the second Gulf war and up to the mid nineties, but recently decreased in the light of the mounting political tension in the region. This research presents a description of the various tourism destinations in Kuwait including desert tourism, spring time camping, natural reserves, marine, heritage, scientific, and recreational tourism. Furthermore, the study provides an analysis of present and possible future environmental problems, which may result from the current unsustainable use of ecotourism sites. Thus, it offers an analytical assessment of the ecotourism trends by using a DPSIR model for environmental indicators. Finally, the study recommends a work strategy for the planning of sustainable ecotourism in Kuwait, which will eventually enhance the sustained economic, social, cultural and environmental developments in the country.
