Kuwait University Students Attitudes to Marriage Customs as Manifested in Social Behavior

Auther : Ali-A. Watfa-Essa M. Al-Ansari

This study seeks to shed light on Kuwait University students attitudes to marriage customs. In particular, it focuses on the youths attitudes to the traditional and modern marriage customs. The data is collected from the answers of 714 Kuwait University students in the second semester of the year 2004. The study has adopted a descriptive method in analyzing the students attitudes to marriage. It involves a questionnaire incorporating variables such as sex, social class, province of residence, university education level and the effect of these variables on the youths attitudes to traditional marriage. The study has yielded the following results:

1)       University students generally reject traditional marriage customs which usually involve match-making practices and high dowries. In fact, they re in favor of other more flexible marriage customs.

2)       There are statistically significant differences between the answers of male students on the one hand and those of female students on the other hand. Female students rejection of all traditional marriage customs was stronger than that of male students, since with this kind of marriage they are the more disadvantaged and humiliated sex.

3)       There are statistically significant differences in the students opinions on love before marriage and friendship between the two sexes when variables such as the province of residence and the university education level are considered. The study finally offered several recommendations promoting the students awareness of the disadvantages of early marriage and polygamy.
