Arab Woman and Labor: A Study on Three Arab Societies

Auther : Nahed Ramzy

The aim of this study is to investigate the obstacles facing the participation of the Arab women in the labor force. The main findings of this study are based on a wide project reported by the present author and carried out under the umbrella of The Arab Women Center for Training and Research in Tunisia with the cooparation of the UNDP, ILO, and ALO. A representative sample of 1547 working women was recruited from three Arab states (United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, and Sudan). A standardized questionnaire has been used to collect the data. The findings showed great similarities among women in the three countries. The vast majority participate with their working income to improve their families’ living standards. The study also sheds light on the main obstacles which cause the low women’s working rates in the labor force. The obstacles include illiteracy, lack of awareness of their role in developing their countries, the overload of the multifold role of women inside and outside the house, and the absence of the high technological training among women. As a result of the study an Arab strategy has been suggested; for the empowerment of women in order to maximize their role in the labor force.
