The Relationship between Social Interaction before Marriage and Divorce Rate

Auther : Fahed Thakeb al-Thakeb

Studies about divorce in Kuwait society are rare. This paper presents the results of an empirical investigation of the relationship between the circumstances of the engagement, the social interaction of husband and wife, childbearing, and divorce. Detailed interview were conducted with 258 randomly selected divorced women. Respondents were well distributed according to age, education, income and religious sect. Several factors were found to be significant. These include: meting the husband before the official engagement, the age of both husband and wife, and socializing together after marriage. The majority of divorced women did not share in positive social activities, such as going to parties or the beach with their husband. A minority shared only negative interactions; such as watching T.V. Having children also had a negative correlation with marital success. On the other hand, socializing together, e.g. going to parties together, going to the beach and playing sports, correlated positively with marital success. Meeting the partner before the engagement was also found to be significant in marital success.
