Auther : Hassan I.Abdullatif / Lulwah N.Hamadah

The present study examines optimism and pessimism and their relationship to extraversion and neuroticism in a sample of 220 under graduates enrolled at Kuwait University. Two measures were administered: The Arabic Inventory for optimism and pessimism and the extraversion and neuroticism of the Essence personality Questionnaire. Results revealed the followings: (1) males and females showed no noted difference in pessimism; however, males exhibited significantly higher optimism level. (2) There was a significant positive correlation between optimism and extraversion and pessimism and neuroticism, and conversely, there is a significant negative correlation between optimism and neuroticism and extroversion, and (3) there is a significant negative correlation between optimism and pessimism. Results were discussed in reference to the notion that optimism and pessimism are better reconsidered as representing two partially independent but correlated dimensions.
