Water Crisis In The Arab World And Potential For War And Potential For War

Auther : Hassan Hamdan AL-ALkim

U.A.E University

The political and strategic role of water will be enhanced in the coming decades. The situation in the Arab world has linked Arab national security to water security. Desert makes around 43% of the area and fertile land constitutes not more than 9.4% of which only 3.8% is actually cultivated. For this reason, Israel pursued a dual policy. On the one hand, it took control of its water resources. On the other, it threatened Arab water resources either through taking control over Arab rivers and reservoirs or developing strong ties with neighboring non Arab countries from where Arab water is flows. Analysts argue that, due to water scarcity, tension is bound to arise and regional wars will break up in the region. Water has become an effective strategic weapon in Israeli hands both in time of peace and war. The purpose of this paper is to examine, investigate and analyze the different variables involved in this crisis.
