COERCIVE STRATEGY: THE LIBERATION OF KUWAIT

Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait must count as one of the major international crises to emerged since the end of World War ll in the second of August 1990, therefore, the region has witnessed an escalating pattern of coercion, aggression and occupation by Iraq, aimed against the independent State of Kuwait.

This event have had devastating effect on the stability of the region and the world as a whole, as well as on the economic, political, military and the like developments of the Gulf States. Accompanying this event, there was an upsurge in diplomatic and military activities led by the United States and the Gulf States with the support of the most of the international community. In response to these developments, U.S.A and a some of 33 countries were providing assistance in one form or another, they forms the so called “the coalition forces (states)”. The coalition implemented a strategy of coercion designed to deal with the occupation and the threat to its interests. This paper will examine coalition policy with regard to liberate Kuwait in the context of theories of coercive diplomacy. Moreover, the aim of this study is to investigate the nature of this coercive policy exercised by the coalition States against the Iraqi occupation of Kuwait.
