System Analysis in Political Science

Auther : A. Rashad.

The purpose of this study is three fold:

First, to investigate David Easton’s efforts to elaborate a conceptual framework         and discuss its major assumptions.

Second, to define Easton’s major contributions to political science, and explore the importance of these contributions.

Third, to evaluate Easton’s efforts to build an empirically oriented political theory, each evolved three phases, each represented by a major publication. The first “The Political System” (1953) presented a case for general theory in political science. The second, “A Framework For Political Analysis” (1965) included the principal concepts for developing such a general theory. The third, “A System Analysis of Political Life” (1965) attempted to elaborate those concepts for becoming empirically applicable.

Easton rejected traditional concepts of political science, such as state and power, that are considered to be ambiguous and value laden.

Through systems analysis, Easton attempted to awaken political scientists new ways of analyzing the complex interrelationships of political life, and new concepts such as inputs, outputs and feedback, and comprehensive conceptions such as the authoritative allocation of values.

Easton devoted much attention to clarifying and simplifying concepts. Yet many critics have attacked his work, which tend to concentrate in three areas: conceptual prospects, operational possibilities and ideological orientations.
