Discrimination between Males and Females and its Impact on Womens situation and Role in Development: Case studies of Jordan& Sudan

Auther : Mohammed Alawadh Galaluddin

This paper attempts to investigate the extent to which parents prefer boys to girls from the time parents try to get children until the time those children are grown to adulthood. The paper starts by using cross-tabulation as well as using some multi-varied analysis techniques on data available from certain demographic surveys conducted in both Jordan and the Sudan. In addition, the paper also utilizes the data on infant and child mortality and mobility and tries to show to what extent the differentials between sexes can be attributed to differentials in treatment in respect of feeding, immunization and sickness care practices. Statistics on enrollment of boys and girls in private and public schools as well the distribution of students abroad by sexes also investigated in an attempt to show how parents often tent to provide their sons with far better/more expensive education than their daughters. Then these attitudes and practices of parents are considered in their historical and current perspectives.
