Alcholism, The Elursive Problem

Auther : Ezzat sayed Ismail

Defining alcoholism is not an easy task. At present, there is no unanimous agreement concerning an accepted definition. From the very beginning, it seems that this failure represents the complexity of the problem. Definitions given WHO, Jellinek, Chafetz, Lundquist and so forth, all stress the loss of efficiency in work, the disturbance of family and social life and the damage of the drinkers physical and mental health. No criterion is cited as regards these effects. To avoid this ambiguity epidemiologist found it more useful to establish rates of excessive alcohol use and rates of alcohol-relate mortality. In dealing with alcoholism, we are referring mainly to Ethyl alcohol, which is the common denominator of beverage alcohol. Some alcoholics also consume Mythyl alcohol when Ethyl alcohol is not available despite its serious damages. One consuming alcohol, the higher centers of the brain are first to be affected. This results into a state of instinctive behavior, relief of anxiety and depressive thoughts. This state is following by ataxia, slurred speech, and vertigo. In heavy does, it may finally lead to death as the depressing effect may include the dedulla with its cardiac, vasomotor and respiratory centers. Alcohol damages are many. Disturbance of minerals and water, liver cirrhosis, important, revealing latent schizophrenia or manic-depressive psychosis, vitamins deficiency especially thiamine, paranoid delusions.Korsakoff syndrome, delirium tremens, withdrawal effects and many other physiological psychological disturbances.
