Orientalism : A Study in the Sociology of Knowledge

Auther : Helmi Sari

The main aim of this paper is to deal with Orientalism from a new perspective, a sociological one. It is argued that sociological factors are both necessary and important in understanding the content of the Orientals institution, which has never been homogeneous but has changed and developed over time, along changes in the socioeconomic structure of the society in which it operates. In order to illustrate this change, the paper follows the historical development of socioeconomic structures and shows how this has determined the shape and content of knowledge about orientalism. In addition, a sociological analysis of this knowledge is given within the framework of the outgroup-ingroup relationship. The paper also attempts to analyze Arab criticism of orientalism as revealed in contemporary Arab writing, and concludes by giving the author’s own criticism of orientalism.
