Rationalizing the Decision Making Process of Weak Product Revitalization: Analytical Study of a Gulf Company

Auther : Hani I. Mesak

This paper presents a quantitative approach for revitalizing weak industrial products. The approach consists of five stages, the first of which is diagnosis of the weaknesses in the product. This is followed by an evaluation of the different types of the product produced by the firm. There is then development of a critical volume mode that accounts for the total cost of a given potential correction program and desired profitability level dictated by management. The correction program is then designed from the developed model based on the findings of the first two stages. The selected corrective actions are then implemented, and evaluated. The whole approach was adopted by a local manufacturer in the Arabian Gulf region. Early results are encouraging and the approach should help an industrial company in this area make sound decision in this relatively unexplored aspect of industrial product line management. The paper concludes by discussing research limitations and highlighting possible directions for future research.
