The Motives of Reading Newspapers Among University Students

Auther : Mohamed Abdel-Hamed Ahmed

This research aims at testing the relationship between an individual’s motives of reading a newspaper, and the regularity of newspaper readership among university students. It is also concerned with the relationship between the needs of the reader and his preferences and interests, and in seeing if any special traits of the students are connected with the regularity of reading newspapers. A questionnaire was devised and administrated to a random sample of 500 students at King Abdulaziz University, Saudi Arabia, representing about  4%  of the total student body. The students were divided into two groups according to whether their field of study was related to the theoretical or empirical sciences, and multivariate analysis was used to show correlation’s between the data. It was found that about 82% of students read newspapers, of which 64% are, regular readers. Those who study empirical sciences are less likely to read a newspaper on a regular basis, and more likely not to read a newspaper at all. This study is one of the firsts in this field and further studies are suggested.
