Correlates Associated with Student Alienation: An Exploratory Study from Jordan University

Auther : Idris Azzam

This study investigates the problem of student youth alienation from Jordan University as an example of specific social subsystem within the whole Jordanian society. It also examines the relationship between alienation and variables such as level of family income, pattern of authority within the family, and the absence of either or both parents. Data was derived from a randomly selected sample of 904 students of different backgrounds studying at Jordan University during 1987. The sample was divided into alienated and non-alienated groups according to various criteria. The study revealed that the alienation of male students is related to an urban background, a low level of family income, and large family size. In contrast, the alienation of female is related to a rural background, an authoritarian pattern of control in the family, and large family size. The study concluded that some specific social conditions directly affecting youth are considered as a source of alienation from their own local society (Jordan University).
