Toward A Better Congruence Between the Characteristics of the Individual, Task, Organization and the External Environment

Auther : Hussein M. A. Alawi

Organizational behavior theories aim at the achievement of a man-organization congruence through the design of jobs and the use of a ’generalistic’ approach in analysis. It is usually assumed that all individuals respond favorably to methods such as MBO, job enrichment, and quality circles, but rarely do these studies take individual difference explicitly into account. The first purpose of this study is to analyses the process of ‘congruence’ at the levels of the individual, job, organization and external environment. Driver’s four-style model (the decisive, hierarchic, flexible, and integrative) is employed in this analysis. The second aim is to use the theory of cognitive style to anchor the ‘differentialist’ approach with management contingency theory. The underlying premise is that cognitive style is the corner stone of job and organization design, and that each style fits a particular job, organization and external environment of unique characteristics. The study concludes by identifying the causes of mismatch and by proposing recommendations that could lead to a stronger and healthier congruence between the individual and the organization.
