Spatial Hierarchies and Social Hierarchies: The Moroccan Case

Auther : Kais Marzouk EL-Weriachi

This paper expounds these which go beyond the idea of country-city relationships, and focus instead on the relationship between space center and space periphery. The study involves the Eastern Rif area of Morocco on one hand, and the relationship of this area with the national metropolis (Rabat-Casablanca) on the other. The concept of dependency is adopted as a theoretical and methodological tool to refer to both the economic basis of the urbanization process and space property at both the regional and metropolitan level. It is important to investigate the social functions of peripheral spaces in relation to the central space when considering rural exodus to the metropolis. The demand for housing is closely linked to both production and reproduction. This paper tries to show the important consequences of urbanization in the Eastern Rif area,

Such as economic introversion, political assimilation and social and cultural marginalization.
