Leadership Styles and Organizational Structure

Auther : Mustapha Achoui , Said Lusief

Unlike early research on leadership, which was characterized by an emphasis on leader traits, modern theories of leadership mainly concentrate on the interaction between the behavior of the leader and organizational structure. This is best represented by the Ohio State University studies, Path Goal theory, theory  X / theory  Y, and the contingency theory associated with Fiedler. This paper attempts to investigate empirically the relationship between leadership styles (according to Fiedler’s theory) and organizational structure. The results of the study significantly support the assumptions that low level leaders (first line) are relationship-oriented, while higher level leaders (second and third levels) are task-oriented. These empirical results may help managers and decision makers to set appropriate leadership style for various organizational structures, with the aim of improving organizational relationship and effectiveness.
